'Beelzebub's tales to his Grandson' comprise the first three books of his 'All and Everything' series, a personal account of Man, the Earth, the Universe, Creation and God. Gurdjieff's purpose in this tome is to 'achieve the destruction, in the consciousness and feelings of people, of deep-rooted convictions which in my opinion are false and quite contradictory to reality.' The book is purposely provocative, with original thoughts on a host of subjects from Buddha and Jesus, through Darwin, to Mesmer and Atlantis. Man, we are told, is an elevated creature - capable of becoming a helper of God - but now asleep to the Truth, dazzled into taking the ephemeral for the Real. Gurdjieff advised any reader to study this book at least three times.
